MMI - General Info
Cost
For Harley Davidson, it's approximately $18,000. The school will help you with acquiring
grants or student loans, so don't let the money issue dissuade you if you're interested
in going. Unless you have really bad credit, you can pay for the school with student
loans, which are low interest rate.... most of the students I knew paid for school
this way. The GI Bill is accepted at MMI!
Class time
Class meets for 5 hours each day. Sessions run from: 7:00am to 12:10pm, 12:40pm
to 5:50pm, or 6:20pm to 11:30pm. A 20-minute lunch break occurs in the middle of
the session, and a couple of 10-minute breaks are also usually included.
Tools
Tools are provided by the school. After passing clinic 7 (test-out clinic) you are
given a set of Snap On tools that are worth $1000 (retail). You are also eligible
to purchase other Snap On tools at 50% of retail price while at MMI. You are NOT
required to purchase any tools while at MMI!
Training aids
Here, I'm referring to the engines, motorcycles, etc. that you will be working on
while learning. This is one of the biggest complaints that many students have about
MMI. Truthfully, many of the engines and motorcycles will have at least one or two
stripped bolts. This is the result of students who have no experience with fasteners
tightening bolts down too tight, or cross-threading them. Plus, the engines get
taken apart three times a day, over and over again. While I was frustrated with
the quality of some of the components, I still learned a lot and was determined
to have a positive outlook. Also, once you finish clinic 7 and enter your electives,
the training aids are in better shape as the students have more experience by that
point and less prone to ruining things.
